The Columbia Gorge has evolved from a scenic drive-thru to a world-class destination. With the boon that windsurfing brought, good food followed and Henni’s in White Salmon, Wash. is an understated find. Tucked in on the main drag among several dining depots, Henni’s is keen on keeping things local and original. From the fries to the cocktails, it’s an unexpected treat in what seems like the middle of nowhere. They have a great happy hour menu if you get there early. The dinner offering is always about what’s fresh. We started with fish tacos, cajunized fries and a caesar salad, inadvertently leaving little room for the main entrees, but we stuck it out and ordered the pork dish to split, leaving no room for dessert. They keep things eclectic with a mix of curries, pastas and classics, like burgers, mac & cheese and fish & chips. Service was solid and the space inviting. They also offer local beers, wine and spirits keeping things close to the source. White Salmon has really stepped up it’s appeal in the Gorge after being in the shadow of Hood River on the Oregon side. That’s a good thing for travelers and places like Henni’s that deserve a stop on the trip along the river.
